The Shenzhen Daily reported on July 20, that the price of garlic has risen more than 1000% in the last year. The picture below is of garlic being taken to market in Jinxiang County in Jining, Shandong Province. It doesn’t look like there is a shortage.
Garlic is used in almost every Chinese dish. The garlic they use looks just like the garlic I see in the grocery stores in the U.S., but its flavor seems milder. Before meal time begins, all the employees in even a small cafe sit down and peel hundreds of cloves to be ready for cooking.
